In
the wake of flooding or other natural disasters, providing access
to safe drinking water is one of the most important preventive measures
that can be taken to reduce the risk of outbreaks of water-borne
diseases such as cholera and typhoid. WCC members are proud of a
long standing partnership between the chlorine industry and the
American Red Cross to help meet this critical need. This partnership
has provided funding and chlorine-based materials, including disinfectants,
PVC pipe, plastic sheeting, and water containers to assist relief
efforts.
Tsunami Relief
Days after the December 26, 2004 tsunami disaster struck South Asia
and Eastern Africa, the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American
Chemistry Council, Euro Chlor, their member companies and individuals
began donating funds via the Chlorine
Chemistry Foundation to support relief efforts being carried
out by the American Red Cross. The associations donated more than
$150,000, specifically to aid water and sanitation programs. Contributions
supported both immediate relief efforts and rebuilding water and
sanitation infrastructure in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives
and Thailand.
