Through
partnerships with the American Red Cross (ARC) and other relief
organizations, approximately 60 Chlorine Chemistry Division of the
American Chemistry Council and World Chlorine Council® member
companies partner to provide financial resources for specific water
projects in developing countries. The funding is used to purchase
water disinfection chemicals and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe and
fittings to create permanent water distributions systems. When used
together to purify and transport water, these products are welcomed
by community residents for the public health improvements they facilitate.
In addition to increased access to and use of an improved, sustainable
water supply, the Water Releif Network-ARC partnership provides
beneficiary communities with improved access to and use of latrines,
training in water supply management, and education in appropriate
hygiene behavior. Most recently, the WRN has helped build sustainable
water systems in communities in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala
and Honduras.
Yamaranguila,
Honduras Project Program
The
Water Relief Network® recently provided a grant to the relief organization
Save the Children of Honduras to provide a reliable, safe
drinking water supply for approximately 2,500 people. Completed
with labor provided by the local community, the new system is sufficient
to supply the town of Yamaranguila with safe, chlorinated water
for the next 20 years, with no need for ongoing outside financial
support.
