The WCC safety program was created to promote safe practices,
improve safety performance, and provide assistance to producers,
distributors, and users of chlorine around the globe. Key initiatives
include:
WCC Incident Reporting & Tracking Program - The WCC Global
Safety Team (GST) began collecting and recording chlorine incident
reports from all regions of the world beginning in 2002. This incident
reporting initiative has the potential to be a significant step
forward in measuring performance, sharing safety expertise, and
promoting improvement.
Member Safety Commitment - In 2002, WCC approved a Member
Safety Commitment that promotes a minimum standard of safety awareness
and implementation for companies that are members of WCC Associations.
Safety Ambassadors Program - The Safety Ambassador Program,
a face-to-face style outreach effort, was launched in 2005 to enhance
contact with producers and chlorine handlers not engaged in WCC
member organizations. Company representatives visiting these new
contacts have agreed to act as "ambassadors" sharing WCC safety
information and answering potential questions.
Other WCC initiatives dedicated to safety include:
- Designation of Chlorine Safety Stewards at companies. To-date,
over 100 Chlorine Safety Stewards have been identified at major
chlorine-producing companies around the world. Additional outreach
efforts are underway to identify safety stewards around the globe.
- Communication of best practices through the WCC Stewardship
Workshops.
- Sharing and, where appropriate, coordination of safety standards/recommendations
across national/regional associations.
- Development and dissemination of safety information through
the WCC Global Network. In 2005, WCC completed the "safety
wall chart" that identifies best practices for chlor-alkali
plants.
